SCREEN presents recent video works from Berlin-based artist and writer Hannah Black.

Hannah Black is a UK-born artist and writer based in New York. Black’s videos collage autobiographical, fictional and pop cultural fragments to explore theories and histories of race, gender, and labor. Black works from partial scripts that are altered and rewritten throughout the editing process. Her videos often fuse dissonant materials through faint formal similarities: a drawn-out note in a Whitney Houston song becomes the cry of a falling person, or the vulnerable specificities of the bodies of bodybuilders are conflated and contrasted with the speculative nature of financial capital as embodied in vacant luxury apartment buildings. Black combines paparazzi photos, top 40 music, and video game visuals with references to Marxist, feminist and black radical theory evoking a paradoxical sense of both alienation and intimacy  Her work suggests this feeling is not only a manifestation of contemporary digital culture but also the product of capitalism and our shared and individual struggles to live within it.
