What is Contemporary? Ultra-red, Leslie Berestein Rojas, and Eric Avila in Conversation

Lecture

The accelerated arrival of commercial art galleries and artist-run spaces in Boyle Heights and its adjacent neighborhoods are at the core of this roundtable discussion. The artist collective Ultra-red, long-time defenders of the public housing community in Los Angeles, will speak with Leslie Berestein Rojas, KPCC’s immigration and emerging communities reporter, and Eric Avila, urban cultural historian and professor of Chicano Studies and Urban Planning at UCLA. The panel will contextualize the current and ongoing debates about Boyle Heights in social, economic, and art-historical terms.
