For Freedoms Congress (FFCON)

All Ages

Looking ahead to the 2020 Presidential election, For Freedoms—a platform for creative civic engagement, discourse, and direct action founded by artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman—takes over Warehouse Programs at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA with a weekend of workshops, actions, and programming to fortify, maintain, and activate the civic infrastructure of creativity. For Freedoms Congress (FFCON) is the first of its kind: a gathering of artists, academic and cultural institutions, and organizations transforming our political landscape through creative civic engagement. Building on the innovative tools we all have as individuals, the festival emphasizes the importance of civics in creating a better society. Participatory and action-oriented programs will empower attendees to connect, explore, and plan over the weekend preceding Super Tuesday (March 3, 2020). The resulting conversations will set the foundation for For Freedom’s next nationwide campaign.

What are you afraid of? To kick-off the SANKOFA x For Freedoms Town Hall series, we will explore Freedom from Fear. During this town hall co-facilitated by Brent Blair, attendees will be invited to explore the inequities of privilege and access through a presentation of Theatre of the Oppressed. Presented by Sankofa.org.

RSVP here.

Saturday, February 29 from 4:45–6:45pm
Freedom From Want Town Hall

Curated by Sankofa.org in collaboration with Pete White.

Outdated assumptions attribute houselessness to poor choices, addiction and mental illness, yet empirical data suggests that chronic housing insecurity, gentrification and sky-high rents underline the crisis. Co-facilitated by Pete White, this conversation on Freedom from Want will focus on the intersection of houselessness and immigration policy, structural obstacles, and recent ballot measures. Presented by Sankofa.org.

RSVP here.

The Los Angeles iteration of the For Freedoms Festival is co-hosted by The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Japanese American National Museum, Hammer Museum, and The Crenshaw Dairy Mart. Visit forfreedoms.org for additional information on all participating organizations.
