Pipilotti Rist in Conversation with Anna Katz

Lecture

To mark the closing weekend of Pipilotti Rist: Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor, MOCA presents a conversation between Pipilotti Rist and the exhibition's curator, Anna Katz. The conversation will touch on many aspects of Rist’s singular approach to video and sound. Rist will also discuss why she views the museum as a “big public living room”—an idea she fully embraces in her exhibition—as well as the new series of site-specific audio-visual works she created for The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.

This program was developed in collaboration with MOCA Teens. The MOCA Teen Program offers high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to learn about the museum, artists, and the possibilities of careers in the arts. The current cohort has been in dialogue with Rist over the course of the exhibition and will be introducing the conversation, moderating the Q&A, and designing a zine for all program attendees, among other creative contributions in the generous spirit of the exhibition.

In celebration of the final two days of Pipilotti Rist: Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor, admission to the exhibition is free with advance reservations on Sunday, June 5 and Monday, June 6. Free museum reservations will be available starting Tuesday, May 31.

Pipilotti Rist was born in Grabs in the Rhine Valley, Switzerland, and currently lives and works in Zürich. She studied graphic design, illustration, and photography at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, as well as audiovisual communications and video at the Basel School of Design. Solo exhibitions of her work have been presented internationally at venues including Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark (2019); Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney (2017); The New Museum, New York (2016); Kunsthaus Zürich (2016); Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea (2012); the Hayward Gallery, London (2011); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Netherlands (2009); the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2008); and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2007) among many others. Rist was awarded the Prix Meret Oppenheim (2014), Zurich Festival Prize (2013), the Harper’s Bazaar Art China Prize (2012), and the Joan Miró Prize (2009).

Anna Katz is Curator at MOCA, where her recent and upcoming exhibitions include Judith F.
