Jordan Casteel on One Day at a Time: Manny Farber and Termite Art

Lecture

Jordan Casteel is a painter who has committed the majority of her emerging practice to representing the black male figure. Recently, the artist’s paintings have expanded to focus on the faceted and rich details that often fill and color her large portraits, leaving behind the bodies of their subjects. Drawing from the minutiae of human life, Casteel’s painting Memorial (2017), one of two of her paintings included in the exhibition One Day at a Time: Manny Farber and Termite Art, is a testament to these essential and quieter characteristics, depicting an evocative street corner tableau captured in Harlem, New York. The artist will give a public tour of works in the exhibition that speak to concerns of the quotidian, including her own.
