Filmforum at MOCA Presents: Breaking the Frame

Screening

In Person: Filmmaker Marielle Nitoslawska

The loss of pioneering artist Carolee Schneemann (1939–2019) this March prompted reflection on how her boundary-pushing and taboo shattering works in painting, performance, and film revolutionized art over the past five decades. Using her own body as a medium, Schneemann’s most well- known pieces—Meat Joy (1964), the film Fuses (1967), Interior Scroll (1975), and Up to and Including Her Limits (1973–1976) shattered taboos surrounding representations of sexuality and the female body. They also irrevocably shaped the course of art history. One of the finest portraits of Schneemann is Marielle Nitoslawska’s remarkable feature-length film Breaking the Frame (2012). The film is can be described as a kinetic, hypercinematic intervention—a critical meditation on the relationship of art to the physical, domestic, and conceptual aspects of daily life and the attributes of memory. Los Angeles Filmforum at MOCA is delighted to host the film’s L.A. premiere.

Tickets available in advance.
