The First Show: Painting and Sculpture from Eight Collections 1940-1980

Organized by Pontus Hultén, Richard Koshalek, and Julia Brown and held at the Temporary Contemporary. The TC's inaugural exhibition explored different aspects of the philosophy and process of collecting art. It included 149 works of painting and sculpture by European and American artists culled from eight outstanding collections. According to Brown "the show is almost like an introduction to the questions and problems the museum itself is facing. How do you form a museum for own time and still have an eye on the future." The works came from the private collections of Giuseppe and Giovanna Panza di Biumo of Italy; Dominique de Menil of Houston; Drs. Peter and Irene Ludwig of Germany; Charles and Doris Saatchi of Great Britain; Howard and Jean Lipman of New York; and from Los Angeles, the Weisman Family Collection, the Robert A. Rowan collection and the Mrs. Taft Schreiber collection.
