presents
THE FOURTH WALL
An evening of performance, music, and video situated around the museum, My Barbarian’s The Fourth Wall is a critical and celebratory engagement with the concept of transparency, both as an optical experience and an institutional mandate. The constellation of events directly addresses the process of developing the exhibition Collection: MOCA’s First Thirty Years in a playful and insightful participatory performance without a stage.

As part of their performance work The Fourth Wall, which will debut on Saturday evening at MOCA’s 30th Birthday Party, Los Angeles–based artist collective My Barbarian will present “Transparency,” a song that takes as its theme the complexities of cultivating and maintaining a public art institution. Written by founding member Alexandro Segade, its lyrics were inspired by interviews that My Barbarian conducted with a sampling of MOCA staff members, including curators, educators, and accountants.

Transparency
Lyrics by Alexandro Segade
2009

Transparency
I can see you can
You see me
Transparency
I can see you can
You see me
Transparency

Listen to me
Transparency
Operates without secrecy
Tonight it's all clear
I'm here, you're here
Is that clear?
Is that clear?

Transparency
I can see you can
You see me
Transparency
Watch it washing all over me
If you're the viewer
How come I can see
You watching me?
Is it you?
Ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo

Listen to me
Transparency
Operate without secrecy
We are watching you
Do what you do
Is that clear?
Is that clear?

Transparency
I can see you can
You see me
Transparency
Watch it washing all over me
If you're the viewer
How come I can see
You watching me?
Is it you?

What was your first museum experience?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
When did you decide that you would pursue working in one?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
When did you start at MOCA?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What show was up?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What is the best show MOCA ever did?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What was the worst? Why?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Where in the museum building do you feel most comfortable? Where do you feel least comfortable?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What do you like and/or dislike about the architecture?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What is the museum’s responsibility to the public?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What is its responsibility to private donors?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What is its responsibility to living artists?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Do you feel secure in your job?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Can you describe the feeling within the institution during the period of crisis?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What were some of the misperceptions, or points missed (among the public, the press, donors and supporters, and artists) when MOCA’s financial problems went public?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What would be so bad about selling off the collection?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Are you now, or have you ever been, an artist?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Do you collect art?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What is a piece from the MOCA collection that has special meaning for you? Is it in the collection show?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
What does this collection say about art history?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
Is there a piece missing from the collection show that you would like to have included?
Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo

Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo
J: Have you ever cried at work?

Transparency
I can see you can
You see me
Transparency
Watch it washing all over me
If you're the viewer
How come I can see
You watching me?
Is it you?

Oo oo oo oo oo oo oo

Architectural fallacy
Collective imagined boundary
Cross it now you're a bodily
Presence in my life

Phenomenal experience
Molecularly, it's so dense
Solidity, opacity
Optical visibility of
My translucent identity

Listen to me
Transparency
Is the viewer
A doer
Or a voyeur?
Reflectivity
Can you see yourself seeing me?

Behold the fall of the fourth wall
Behold the fall of the fourth wall
Behold the fall of the fourth wall
Behold the fall of the fourth wall

Transparency
I can see you can
You see me
Transparency
If you’re the viewer how come
I can see
You watching me
Is it you?
Ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo
Transparency
I can see you can you see me
Transparency
If you’re the viewer how come
I can see
You watching me?
Is it you?
Ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo
Transparency
I can see you can you see me

Transparency
Transparency

Transparency

Ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo
Ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo
Ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo oo oooo ooo ooo
