Plant Sale

The Plant Sale returns to The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA for its second year. Artist Alika Cooper's itinerant collaborative event brings together artists and growers from across the Los Angeles basin to celebrate and sell plants & related wares. The event will also feature a Sustainable Skillbuilding composting workshop from 12-1pm led by Compostable LA’s founder Monique Figueiredo. During this interactive conversation, participants will have the opportunity to ask a compost expert all of their burning questions, learn how to embrace this new habit, and hone their skills further!

Alika Cooper is a Los Angeles based artist and UCLA-certified horticulturist. Outside of the studio, Cooper oversees the maintenance of both public and residential specialty gardens.

Monique Figueiredo founded Compostable in 2019 when she saw a need for additional community composting resources. Her vision for a community-led organization is woven through the fiber of Compostable's foundation. In 2022, this vision was recognized nationally when Monique received Waste360’s 40 Under 40 award. Monique has over 8 years of non-profit experience in human services. She progressed from direct service to management, becoming an advocate for mental health funding and worker safety issues. She has since shifted to sustainability as her avenue to serve others, since caring for the natural world ultimately benefits its inhabitants as well. Monique completed UCLA's Sustainability Certificate program. She further developed her knowledge through Kiss The Ground's Soil Advocate training and The 131 School's Compost Operator Certificate program. She serves as a project advisor for Much Love Animal Rescue and helped start the LA Chapter of the California Alliance for Community Composters.

Compostable LA is a community compost company whose mission is to close the loop in our food systems by transforming former 'waste' into future nutrients, by encouraging environmental justice, and by providing transparency around food systems in Los Angeles.

The 2024 Sustainable Skillbuilding series is made possible by Nora McNeely Hurley and the Manitou Fund.
