Rolywholyover A Circus
Sept. 12-Nov. 28, 1993
-
Rolywholyover A Circus was a major MOCA traveling exhibition based on the life and work of the composer John Cage. The show was organized by Julie Lazar. Cage himself curated or "composed" the show, selecting the musical and visual works of artists he considered important, in addition to selections of his own work. Cage called the show a circus based on his conception of a series of galleries or spaces displaying or performing different works at different times with different purposes, all forming a sort of musical composition. The frequent random quality of exhibition or performance was based on Cage's long-held compositional technique of using the "chance operations" found in the I Ching (the Chinese Book of Changes). In addition to the exhibition, a series of performances and events called Citycircus was held throughout Los Angeles. After MOCA, the show traveled to the Menil Collection in Houston, Jan. 14-Apr. 3, 1994; the Guggenheim in New York, Apr. 29-Aug. 13, 1994; the Art Tower Mito, Japan, Nov. 3, 1994-Feb. 26, 1995; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Apr. 2-Jun. 11, 1995.
