This comprehensive historical survey of the major Italian art movement Arte Povera emphasizes the artists’ creative use of materials and attempts to bridge “art” and “life.” Zero to Infinity: Arte Povera 1962-1972 featured work by fourteen of the movement’s key artists: Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Piero Gilardi, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Emilio Prini, and Gilberto Zorio. The exhibition illuminates several of the movement’s major themes, including the ineffability of eternity and infinity; elemental relationships in nature; and the emphasis on craftsmanship and everyday materials as a political stance against capitalism.
