The Temporary Contemporary
William Brice traced the evolution of key themes and ideas across the three decades of the artist’s work surveyed. The earliest works in the exhibition were inspired by California’s unique nature, especially its rock forms, seascapes, and flowers. Later, his attention shifted to figures, and finally, to primal symbols. The retrospective included 49 paintings and 25 works on paper.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue, co-published by MOCA and the Fellows of Contemporary Art.
William Brice: A Selection of Painting and Drawing, 1947-1986 was organized by Julia Brown Turrell, Adjunct Curator, with Ann Goldstein, Research Associate, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
The Temporary Contemporary is the original name of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
