Dec 19, 1993 – Feb 6, 1994
When
December 19, 1993 – February 6, 1994

This mid-career survey of Vija Celmins featured approximately eighty paintings, drawings, and sculptural objects made between 1964 and 1992.

This chronological retrospective traced Celmins’s practice from her early paintings of domestic appliances against gray backgrounds; through her grisaille paintings of World War II fighter jets coming apart; into the photorealistic drawings and paintings of natural expanses like oceans and skies.

Vija Celmins traveled from the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, to MOCA.

The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.

Vija Celmins was organized by Judith Tannenbaum, the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
