This mid-career survey exhibition of the work of Thomas Struth comprises ninety three photographs made between 1977 and 2002. The artist is known for his images of museum visitors looking at art, nine large color prints of which introduce the show. Made between 1988 and 1992, these photographs document visitors at museums in London, Paris, Vienna, Rome, Naples, Venice, and Chicago. Titled after the museums in which they were shot, the photographs do not identify the artworks pictured in them.
The second section of Thomas Struth presents additional museum photographs alongside small, black-and-white photos dating between 1977 and 1988, depicting empty city streets at dawn in New York, Chicago, Paris, Rome, and Tokyo. The third and largest gallery includes large family portraits; images of forests in Australia, Japan, China, Germany, and Brazil; and other photographs from around the world.
Thomas Struth traveled from the Dallas Museum of Art to MOCA, and will travel to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
