Theaster Gates: An Epitaph for Civil Rights presented new mixed-media sculptures and installation works referencing the 1963 Birmingham campaign—a nonviolent civil rights protest met with intense repression by the Birmingham police and fire departments, which used high-pressure water hoses and attack dogs on the demonstrators. These installations were made with raw materials salvaged from Chicago’s South Side, where the artist was based, including cracked moldings and cabinet doors, used to frame decommissioned fire hoses.
