In the late 1990s, a vibrant art scene flourished in the Canadian prairie town of Winnipeg, in part due to the eight-person collective, The Royal Art Lodge. Consisting of artists Michael Dumontier, Hollie Dzama, Marcel Dzama, Neil Farber, Drue Langlois, Myles Langlois, Jonathan Pylypchuk, and Adrian Williams, the group was formed in 1996 and had produced an impressively expansive body of work by the time of this exhibition. The Royal Art Lodge: Ask the Dust presented approximately three hundred collaborative drawings and over four hundred solo works including collages, sculptures, videos, drawings, music, costumes, puppets, and dolls.
This internationally touring exhibition was co-organized by The Drawing Center, New York; The Power Plant, Toronto; De Vleeshal, Middelburg, the Netherlands; and Plug In ICA, Winnipeg.
The Royal Art Lodge: Ask the Dust was organized and co-curated by Joseph R. Wolin and Wayne Baerwaldt, and Michael Darling, Associate Curator, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
