The Temporary Contemporary

The first public presentation of Barry Lowen's gift to MOCA, this exhibition comprised sixty-eight paintings, sculptures, photographs, and drawings by forty-one artists. Acquired over fifteen years, Lowen focused on the contemporary art of his time, from 1960s and 1970s Minimalism to 1980s Neo-Expressionism and New Image Painting, Postminimalism, and postmodernism. Pivotal works by Richard Artschwager, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, and Cy Twombly, as well as works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Eric Fischl, Ellsworth Kelly, Anselm Kiefer, Brice Marsden, Agnes Martin, Elizabeth Murray, Joel Shapiro, Cindy Sherman, and Frank Stella, were on view.

The exhibition was accompanied by an exhibition.

The Museum of Contemporary Art: The Barry Lowen Collection was organized by Ann Goldstein, Research Associate, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

The Temporary Contemporary was the original name of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
