The Temporary Contemporary
Summer 1985: Nine Artists intended to demonstrate the diversity of artists working in LA. It comprised nine solo exhibitions for nine artists: Jo Ann Callis, Suzanne Caporael, Guy de Cointet, Mary Corse, Steve Galloway, Jill Giegerich, Gronk, Willie Herrón, and Bill Viola. These sub-exhibitions ranged from single, large-scale commissions to broad, in-depth surveys. LA-based architect Tim Vreeland designed the expansive installation, which accommodated photographs by Callis, murals by Gronk and Herrón, drawings by Galloway, paintings by Caporael and Corse, videos by Viola, constructions by Giegerich, performances by de Cointet and Gronk, and screenings of Viola’s video works.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
Summer 1985: Nine Artists was organized by Julia Brown, Curator, with Jacqueline Crist, and Connie Butler, Intern, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
The Temporary Contemporary is the original name of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
