STRIKING DISTANCE included painting, sculpture, photography, works on paper, video, and sound installations by Los Angeles artists Jill Giegerich, Mike Kelley, Lari Pittman, Stephen Prina, Peter Shelton, Alexis Smith, Mitchell Syrop, and Bill Viola. Fifteen of the works on display were acquired by MOCA through the El Paso Natural Gas Company for California Art. The title of the show is a work by Syrop, and MOCA, in acquiring this work, gained the right to present this phrase in any conceivable form.
The exhibition traveled to Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara, California (16 July–28 August, 1988); Fresno Arts Center and Museum, Fresno, California (17 September–30 October, 1988); and University Art Gallery, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, California (17 November–16 December 1988).
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
