This exhibition of the work of Vancouver-based artist Stan Douglas includes three film and video installations and thirty-three color photographs. Douglas’s work combines historic cinematic techniques with contemporary technologies to produce images and narratives examining localities at a defining historical moment. The photographs in Stan Douglas documented the artist’s research process for each of the show’s three central installations: Der Sandmann (1995), based on an essay by Sigmund Freud and the titular tale by E.T.A. Hoffman; Nu•tka• (1996), exploring the colonization of Vancouver Island and its role in 18th century English and Spanish politics and trade; and Win, Place or Show (1998) takes place amidst the Strathcona, Vancouver redevelopment crisis of the 1950s.

Stan Douglas was organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada, and traveled to the Edmonton Art Gallery; The Power Plant, Toronto; Museum de Pont, Tilburg, The Netherlands; and MOCA Grand Avenue.
