With photographs, models, video, sample materials, and one freestanding, prefabricated module, Some Assembly Required presents eight architectural projects for modular dwellings exemplifying a range of prefab styles, from owner-built kit homes to fully factory-made modules.
Some Assembly Required examines how contemporary technological innovations has transformed both the practical and aesthetic possibilities for modular and prefabricated homes, resulting in a growing industry for these comparatively affordable, but still customizable, designs. Lazor Flatpak, for example, by the Minneapolis-based Lazor Office, is organized around an eight-foot, single-story panel as its basic building unit, which can otherwise be configured completely according to a client’s needs. Other featured designers included Alchemy Architects, Marmol Radziner + Associates, Michelle Kauffman Designs, Pinc House, Resolution: 4 Architecture, Rocio Romero, and Steven Holl.The exhibition traveled from the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Vancouver Art Gallery; the Yale School of Architecture, New Haven; to MOCA.
