For their first museum exhibition in the US, young French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec transform a gallery with an installation of their products and designs, emphasizing their characteristically innovative approach to the composition of interior space. Celebrated for their ultra-modern materials and cutting-edge fabrication techniques, the Bouroullec brothers often describe their creations as “micro-architecture,” since they transcend individual pieces of furniture without constituting fully built environments. Their office system Joyn (2002), for example, comprises multiple reconfigurable dividers, surfaces, and accessories, facilitating collaboration through a large scale workstation meant for multiple users.
All the pieces in Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are functional, but some easily read as fine art, such as Bricks (2000) and Clouds (2002), two abstract, sculptural room dividers/shelves; and Algues (2003), a complex system of modular, algae-like plastic objects that could be linked to create a tapestry.
