A comprehensive survey of Richard Artschwager. Artschwager’s work ranges in form from three-dimensional, Pop-Minimalist constructions to semi-realist grisaille paintings based on photos. Works in the exhibition printed simplified images of furniture onto the surfaces of minimalist objects, creating unusable, three-dimensional graphic icons of utilitarian items, as well as replicated newspaper photos, painted on the insulation board Celotex.
The internationally touring exhibition included over sixty paintings and sculptures made between 1962 and 1986 and traveled from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; MOCA; Palacio de Velazquez, Madrid; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Stadtische Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf, Germany.
Richard Artschwager was organized by Richard Armstrong, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and Ann Goldstein, Curator, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
