Displayed on the occasion of its acquisition by the museum, Red Groom's mixed-media tableauThe Discount Store, was originally commissioned by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, in 1970 and eventually given in MOCA by Irma and Norman Braman. Thirteen feet high and occupying fifteen-hundred square feet of floor space, the piece was presented with four other works, includingKnife Ship II(1985), from MOCA's collection.
