The exhibition featured works on paper, paintings, photographs, and sculpture drawn from the extensive number of intimately scaled works in MOCA's collection that focus on the human face or figure. Demonstrating the range of MOCA's holdings, the exhibition included work by Alexander Calder, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, George Segal, Joel Shapiro, Cindy Sherman, Nicolas da Stael, and Andy Warhol.

Portraits in the Permanent Collection was organized by Elizabeth T. Smith , Associate Curator, and Stacia Payne, National Endowment for the Arts Curatorial Fellow, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
