Poetics of the Handmade features eight artists based in Latin America whose diverse practices share one theme: their handcrafted production. Each artist observes materiality and process as driving forces of their work, even as their output ranges from site-specific, room-sized installations to minute drawings. Featured in the exhibition are: Eduardo Abaroa’s Red para la inspección de cavidades coporales (nodo en la esquina) (The body cavity inspection network [node in a corner], 2007); Magdalena Atria’s Sonriendo desesperadamente I (Smiling desperately I, 2004); Mónica Bengoa’s W, Así lo veo (o el gran cuaderno de instrucciones de uso de un aficionado a clasificar las cosas) (W, that’s the way I see it [or the notebook, a user’s manual of an amateur who classifies things], 2006–07); Fernando Bryce’s Américas (2005); Darío Escobar’s untitled, silvered sports gear sculptures (2000); Máximo González’s ¿Dónde se han ido las flores? (Where have all the flowers gone?, 2006); Marco Maggi’s aluminum foil drawings; and Livia Marin’s Ficciones de un uso (Fictions of a use, 2004).
