The first US museum survey of this LA artist, Paul McCarthy, brings together more than one hundred artworks from over thirty years of McCarthy’s career, including installations, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and videos. The retrospective presents performances, films, photographs, and sculptures from earlier in McCarthy’s career alongside installations of the 1990s. Early works included McCarthy’s Dead H (1968), his film Mountain Bowling (1969), and Plaster Your Head and One Arm into a Wall (1972), Penis Painting (1973), Meat Cake (1974), and The Garden (1991–92). The Garden debuted at MOCA’s 1992 exhibition Helter Skelter and presaged a series of videos and installations, including Bossy Burger (1991), Cultural Gothic (1992–93), Heidi (1992, with Mike Kelley), Pinocchio Pipenosehouseholddilemma (1994), The Painter (1995), and Santa Chocolate Shop (1997).
Organized by The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.
