Painting in Tongues

Jan 29 – Apr 17, 2006
When
January 29 – April 17, 2006

This survey examines the work of seven emerging international artists employing new and challenging approaches to the medium of painting. By employing a mix of styles, modes, sources, and materials, the featured artists resist the convention of the singular artistic “signature,” cultivating multiple painterly subjectivities and, therefore, avenues for growth. Despite aesthetic variations, however, the paintings of each artist reveal coherent conceptual concerns—practice-specific frameworks underlying the visual differences between each piece. Painting in Tongues includes works by Kai Althoff, Gillian Carnegie, Mark Grotjahn, Lucy McKenzie, Rodney McMillian, Ivan Morley, and Anselm Reyle.

Painting in Tongues was organized by Michael Darling, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
