This single-gallery presentation broadly grouped historical and contemporary works which employ the figure, encompassing a diversity of drawing styles and approaches to the process and materials of drawing by artists including Richard Diebenkorn, David Hockney, Susan Rothenberg and Joel Shapiro.
The exhibition posed questions about the figure at a moment when many contemporary artists were investigating figuration and its history, often as a way to reinvest work with socio-political or personal content.
Notes on the Figurative: Graphic Works from the Permanent Collection was organized by Connie Butler, Assistant Curator, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
