Nancy Spero comprised of fourteen of the political artist’s scroll paintings made between 1972 and 1988, as well as a site-specific piece commissioned by MOCA for the exhibition, titled To Soar, which featured Spero’s signature, mythic-feminist images handprinted directly onto the museum’s walls. Scroll paintings on view examined historical and contemporary political experiences from women around the world, represented in syncopated, hieroglyphic or Etruscan frieze-like compositions. The First Language (1981) wrapped one hundred and ninety feet around the gallery
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
