The Temporary Contemporary
In Context: "monuments" for V. Tatlin from Dan Flavin comprised thirty-nine fluorescent light sculptures and fifty-eight drawings created between 1964 and 1982 by Dan Flavin. The exhibition’s titular series of light sculptures, “monuments” for V. Tatlin, pays tribute to Russian artist Vladimir Tatlin’s unrealized Monument to the Third International (1919–20), a colossal tower symbolizing the revolutionary ideals of the Communist International.
In Context (1984–1985) was a series of exhibitions that commissioned artists to develop critical spatial interventions in creative or unusual sites.
The exhibition traveled to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (September 29 – November 25, 1984); Centre d'arts Contemporain de Bordeaux, France (March 1 – April 28, 1985; and the Rijksmuseum Kroller-Muller in Otterlo, the Netherlands (November 23, 1985 – January 12, 1986).
