The first mid-career survey of work by this conceptual photographer, Lorna Simpson includes eight of the artist’s acclaimed image and text works (1985–1992); eight major photographs on felt (1994–1998); five film installations (1997–2003); and a selection of the artist’s recent photographs (2001–03). These works examine how photography and language define conditions of gender and race, as in Simpson’s iconic Twenty Questions (A Sampler) (1986), comprising four identical portraits of a Black woman facing away from the camera, accompanied by five plaques with cliché similes directed to the viewer.
