Laura Owens is the first major monographic survey of the Los Angeles-based artist’s work and traces her development from 1997 to the present. Owens explores beauty and decoration, integrating elements such as collage, fabric, and decorative patterns into her paintings. Her unique style moves from landscape to abstraction with thick and energetic brushstrokes, fanciful childlike doodles, and sophisticated line drawings inspired by English embroidery, Chinese and Japanese landscape painting, and her own photography.
Laura Owens features approximately forty paintings and works on paper—including significant new large-scale paintings created especially for this exhibition—that move with ease between high and low, personal and social, figuration and abstraction.
