L.A. on My Mind: Recent Acquisitions from MOCA’s Collection

Showcasing recent acquisitions by emerging, LA-based creators, this exhibition reemphasized MOCA’s longstanding commitment to collecting work by local artists. L.A. on My Mind: Recent Acquisitions from MOCA’s Collection comprised fourteen paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photographs, and video artworks. Liz Craft’s large-scale diorama The Living Edge (1998) dominated the display, depicting a landscape of flowers and trees populated by a gigantic fiber snake, 2 life-size Styrofoam deer, and three plastic hummingbirds. Drawings, collages, and paintings by Andrea Bowers, Dave Muller, Jason Rhoades, and Richard Hawkins were on view. Hawkins’s City Underground (1997), made of empty cereal boxes, paper cups, ads from fashion magazines, and other found objects hung from the underside of a table. Other artists in L.A. on My Mind included Hirsch Perlman, Jorge Pardo, Mark Grotjahn, Dean Sameshima, Adam Ross, and Amy Adler.
