The Temporary Contemporary

John Chamberlain was a major, thirty-year retrospective of around one hundred works by the Abstract Expressionist and Neo-Dada artist.

John Chamberlain included collages, drawings, and paintings, as well as sculptures in Plexiglas, paper, foam rubber, and aluminum foil. Among these were two new pieces made specially for this retrospective: an enormous, interactive, urethane couch from his “Barges” series; and Straits of Night, a totemic, five-part crushed automobile sculpture.

The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue co-published by MOCA and Hudson Hill Press.

The exhibition was organized by Julie Sylvester, Guest Curator, and Jacqueline Crist, Assistant Curator, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

The Temporary Contemporary is the original name of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
