The second part of a two-part exhibition, In Context: Mark Lere, New and Selected Work was preceded by In Context: Mark Lere’s “Halo/Wheel”, which showed across the city of LA from July 21 to October 15, 1984. New and Selected Work was conceived as an internal corollary to Halo/Wheel, which comprised sculptural fragments installed at six parks, five street locations, and one part of the LA River.
New and Selected Work transformed The Temporary Contemporary building into a kind of studio, with Lere drawing on the walls and manipulating the space through off-kilter installations of his hand-made, proto-minimalist sculptures.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
In Context (1984–1985) was a series of exhibitions that commissioned artists to develop critical spatial interventions in creative or unusual sites.
In Context: Mark Leer, "New and Selected Images" was organized by Julia Brown, Curator, with Kerry Brougher, Assistant Curator, and Connie Butler, Intern, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
The Temporary Contemporary was the original name of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
