In Context: James Turrell, Occluded Front

In Context: James Turrell, Occluded Front presented light and space installations made by Turrell between 1967 and 1985.Turrell created three new pieces that were specific to The Temporary Contemporary, including an installation, Second Meeting (1985), in the tiny, abandoned brick gas station outside the museum.

Inside The Temporary Contemporary Turrell installed a site-specific work from his “Ganzfelds” (1976–), transforming a large room with continually changing shades of colored light to give the illusion of no floors or walls. Also on view were examples of Turrell’s earliest body of light works, his “Projection Pieces” (1969–1999), which used high-intensity projectors to cast images of 3D geometries onto corners and walls; as well as one gallery space exhibiting plans for Roden Crater (1977–), a large-scale artwork created within a volcanic cinder cone in Painted Desert, Arizona. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.

The Temporary Contemporary is the original name of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
