The first retrospective of this major postwar American photographer presented over two hundred images, including ten enlarged contact sheets, organized into nine roughly chronological segments corresponding to stages of Winogrand’s eclectic career: “Eisenhower Years”; “The Street”; “Women”; “The Zoo”; “On the Road”; “The Sixties, Etc.”; “The Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Rodeo”; “Airport”; and “Unfinished Work.” This final section included a selection of prints and slides from the over 300,000 unprocessed exposures left behind at the time of the artist’s death. During the exhibition’s MOCA run, a selection of Winogrand’s works from the museum’s permanent collection were presented in an adjacent gallery.
Garry Winogrand traveled to MOCA as part of a seven-city tour. It was shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Carnegie Mellon University Art Gallery, Pittsburgh; after MOCA, it traveled to the Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery, University of Texas, Austin and the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
Garry Winogrand was organized by John Szarkowski, Director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, with Connie Wolf, Project Director at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
