The first solo museum exhibition of this young, LA-based artist's work comprised five large-scale paintings of isolated and repeated architectural elements, each suspended in vast, empty space. To make these works, Toba Khedoori combined two or four sheets of six-by-eleven-foot paper, applied a thin layer of wax across each surface, and inscribed each image into the wax with pencil and oil paint. Traces of detritus in their brushed, yellowish surfaces amplify the ghostly quality of each eerily figureless space. The five paintings in the show included Untitled (seats) (1996), Untitled (railing) (1996), Untitled (park benches) (1997), Untitled (hallway) (1997), and Untitled (chain link fence) (1997). The show traveled to the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
Focus Series: Toba Khedoori was part of the museum’s Focus Series (1992–1998), which was dedicated to presentations of distinct bodies of work by artists working in all media and featured a roster of distinguished local and international artists.
