Focus Series: Richard Wilson featured two monumental installations by the celebrated British sculptor: 20:50 (1987) and Deep End (1994), the latter specially commissioned for its MOCA Grand Avenue site. First staged at Matt’s Gallery in London, 20:50 filled a gallery waist-high with reflective, refined motor oil and included a walkway into the space. Deep End, inspired by another British artist, David Hockney, and his fascination with LA swimming pool culture, comprised an actual fiberglass swimming pool with steps and a diving board, suspended upside down from its gallery’s pyramidal skylight.
Focus Series: Richard Wilson was part of the museum’s MOCA Focus series (1992–1998), which was dedicated to presentations of distinct bodies of work by artists working in all media and featured a roster of distinguished local and international artists.
