A major exhibition of work by post-minimalist artist, Eva Hesse Drawings illuminates the core place of drawing in Hesse’s broader practice by juxtaposing a small selection of her sculptures with examples of lesser-known works on paper, working sketches, and notebooks. Best known for her latex and fiberglass sculptures and reliefs alluding to flesh, skin, and decay, Hesse was first a painter and most consistently a drawer, experimenting with biomorphic abstraction, Dadaist mechanical drawings, and obsessive graph paper geometries over the course of her short career. As the exhibition demonstrates, these drawings demonstrate conceptual continuities with the sculpture, including in the way they mediate organicism and geometry, process and form.
After showing at The Menil Collection, Houston, and The Drawing Center, New York, the exhibition traveled to MOCA Grand Avenue and wil travel to the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
