Ernesto Neto presents one large-scale artwork by the Brazilian-born artist recently added to MOCA’s permanent collection. Best known for his large-scale environments filled with organic forms, Neto transforms the gallery with Three Religions, No God, and the Children (2003), which comprises three enterable, tent-like shapes made of colored, translucent spandex, installed over a green, foam floor piece. Biomorphic foam bases anchor the spandex tents to this flooring; another green foam piece at the center of the installation resembles a large puzzle piece and is pocketed with hand-size cavities. Spandex balls packed with aromatic spices such as chamomile, lavender, and oregano dangle from the ceiling, and interactive toys are embedded in the foam floor, creating a symphony of textural, auditory, visual, and olfactory stimulants.
