The exhibition featured forty paintings, three sculptures, eight lithographs, and two wall reliefs created by Kelly between the late 1940s and 1997. The works were installed across nine galleries. The first featured important, large-scale pieces; the remaining eight were roughly chronological. The exhibition traveled from the Guggenheim to MOCA, the Tate Gallery, London, and the Haus der Kunst, Munich.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
Ellsworth Kelly: A Retrospective was organized by Diane Waldman, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Paul Schimmel, Chief Curator, and Stacia Payne, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
