Dan Graham: Beyond examines the full range of Graham’s career through a focused selection of photographs, film and video, architectural models, indoor and outdoor pavilions, conceptual projects for magazine pages, drawings and prints, and writings. The exhibition highlights the diversity of Graham’s output while identifying a unifying concern of his practice: the changing relationship between the individual and the social, as mediated by architecture and mass media. Homes for America (1966–67), for example, pairs photographs of suburban New Jersey with schematic analyses of the tract housing phenomenon in the US—cookie-cutter suburban developments that homogenized large swaths of the country in the aftermath of World War II. Other featured works include Body Press (1970–72), Public Space/Two Audiences (1976), Performer/Audience/Mirror (1977), and Rock My Religion (1982–84), among others.
The exhibition travels from MOCA to the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
