The Temporary Contemporary
Exhibited at The Temporary Contemporary as part of LA’s citywide British cultural festival, UK/LA ‘88—A Celebration of British Arts, Boyd Webb comprised thirty-four photographs, a video, and a sculptural installation by the New Zealand-born British photographer.
Webb’s large-scale photographs depict environmental installations constructed and later destroyed by the artist, sometimes with figures posing within them, each print is unique. The sculptural installation consisted of a room-sized, “breathing” tent that resembled a Ku Klux Klan hood, with two, eye-like peepholes and a mirror hanging inside.
The installation was commissioned by MOCA for the museum’s recently launched Artist Project Series. The photographs traveled from the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (May 8 – June 21, 1987), Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hanover (July 17 – August 30, 1987); The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (September 20 – December 13, 1987); to MOCA for the final stop on its tour.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
The Temporary Contemporary is the original name of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
