The first retrospective of the artist's work and featured approximately seventy works, including paintings, sculptures, books, photographs, and watercolors in which this German artist captures monumental images of landscape and architecture utilizing a variety of materials such as oil, sand, straw, tar, lacquer and lead. MOCA's presentation included an additional five mixed media lead works and two paintings lent by the artist.

Anselm Kiefer was organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
