The most comprehensive exhibition of this legendary Pop artist’s work ever mounted in the US at its time, the Andy Warhol Retrospective compiles over two hundred drawings, paintings, and sculptures dating from the 1940s to 1986, the year before Warhol’s death.
The retrospective, organized chronologically, begins with rarely seen pen-and-ink drawings by the artist. In 1962, after Marilyn Monroe’s tragic suicide, Warhol produced his first screen-printed series, depicting the celebrity’s smiling face. His subsequent Disaster paintings featured heavily in the exhibition, including works from the Suicide (1962), Electric Chair (1963–64, 67–68), and Car Crash (1962–64) series. Additionally featured in the exhibition were works from Most Wanted Men (1964), Flowers (1964–65), and the Self-Portraits (1966–67), as well as Warhol’s final work, Last Supper (1986).
The exhibition traveled to the Tate Modern, London.
