The first major survey of Bruce Conner’s career, 2000 BC: THE BRUCE CONNER STORY PART II included approximately one hundred and fifty works by the artist including film, assemblage, painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, printmaking, and photography. Influenced by the Beat generation community in San Francisco, where he moved in 1957, Conner garnered international recognition for his found object assemblages, which combined scavenged dolls, furniture, jewelry, and architectural fragments. His early film A Movie (1958) established Conner in avant-garde film circles. THE BRUCE CONNER STORY features lesser known facets of the artist’s practice, including abstract, felt-tip pen drawings, etchings from his three-volume portfolio The Dennis Hopper One Man Show (1971–73), and his large-scale photograms, Angels (1973–75).
2000 BC: THE BRUCE CONNER STORY PART II is organized by the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and traveled to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the de Young Museum, San Francisco, and MOCA Grand Avenue.
