The Image of Abstraction contained fifty-five paintings by ten artists who redefined abstract painting in the 1980s: Jean-Pierre Bertrand, Domenico Bianchi, Ross Bleckner, Moira Dryer, Tim Ebner, Helmut Federle, Imi Knoebel, Sherrie Levine, Gerhard Richter and Gary Stephan. To coincide with the exhibition, selections of abstract paintings from the museum's permanent collection were displayed in a show titled Postwar Abstraction: 1945-1960, March 22 – September 25, 1988.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
The Image of Abstraction was organized by Kerry Brougher, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
