MOCA Curatorial Assistant Rebecca Matalon leads a walkthrough ofMickalene Thomas: Do I Look Like a Lady?The exhibition includes a two-channel video installation capturing a rich, cross-generational history of performances by black women including Josephine Baker, Adele Givens, Whoopi Goldberg, Whitney Houston, Eartha Kitt, Jackie “Moms” Mabley, and Nina Simone. Bristling with explicit language, the work presents women speaking openly about their bodies, sexuality, and desires, confronting and contesting culturally determined and often racially biased Western ideals of beauty.
